North American mink still commanding premium
THE OPENING SALE OF THE SEASON LAST WEEK AT NORTH AMERICAN FUR AUCTIONS demonstrated that buyers are still willing to pay premiums for North American mink over all others.
While other producers, particularly Danish farmers, have been narrowing the gap by developing shorter-napped pelts – with the continuing help of new North American breeding stock – a comparison between NAFA’s labeled black males and Danish black velvet types shows that last year’s 9% gap has now been narrowed to about 6%. On the other hand, the divide between the comparable black females, which was about 2% last year, is now closer to 8%. But the Danes are still increasing their production of velvets, now close to 70% of their 14 million annual mink crop, as are other countries.
This sale also marked NAFA’s launch of a new label system, which adds the name of its top ranchers to the logo labels manufacturers apply to garments.
